You probably don’t know me, but I want to thank you for helping my family.
I am a 55-year old grandmother raising my three grandchildren and it’s not easy.
Thanks to you, I know I can count on the Jonnycake Center for food, especially during school vacations. I buy clothes from the thrift store and I get help with school supplies, holiday gifts, and I can even file my taxes at the Center for free.
I graduated from South Kingstown High School barely able to read or write. Today, I work at the high school as a lunch lady and I love it. As students go through the line, I try to encourage them to stay out of trouble and study hard.
Last year, I was so thrilled to become part of the Peace Dale Leadership Council. Made up of parents and grandparents like me, we advocate for our community’s needs. As a result, we now have an after-school program for middle school students, something we have been wanting for years. We helped with the search for a new superintendent and every other month, we meet with town leaders – including the town manager and elected officials – to talk about the things that are important to families who are struggling like mine.
This new work has helped me – and many others – feel a new sense of empowerment. With your support, the Jonnycake Center not only helps people put food on the table, they have helped my community have a seat at the table.
When my family and I sit down for Thanksgiving, we will give thanks for you.
I hope you can make a donation again this year. There are so many others like me who are doing their best, but sometimes need extra help.
Thank you again for all that you do.
Grandmother, mother, daughter, sister, and community leader
