The Plant A Row program is a simple way that local gardeners can help fight hunger and provide better nutrition to our food pantry clients. You don't need a big garden to help, and every little bit of produce counts. Even people who grow vegetables in containers can participate. If you have no space to grow, consider starting a garden at your place of worship, neighborhood school, or community center. Make a commitment to share your extra produce with our food pantry.
Plant A Row (PAR) began in Anchorage, AK in the garden column of Jeff Lowenfels, former Garden Writers Association president, when he asked gardeners to plant a row of vegetables for Bean's Cafe, an Anchorage soup kitchen. Since then, PAR has grown exponentially through continued media support, individual and company sponsorship, and volunteers. For more information about the history of this program, visit the Garden Writers Association website at www.gardenwriters.org/par/
Because this is a national program, we ask people to sign up so that we can keep track of how much produce is donated every year. To support the Jonnycake Center through this program, please complete and return our enrollment form, using the link to the right. And remember to log in your donations on the "Plant a Row" page on the donation log at the food pantry.
